Lesson Six

What’s the date today? It’s Wednesdaythe22ndofApril

Last Monday was the first lesson (= number 1)
Last Tuesday was the second lesson (= number 2)
Last Wednesday was the third lesson (=number 3)
Monday was the fourth lesson (lesson 4)
Yesterday was the fifth lesson (lesson 5)
Today is the the sixth lesson (lesson 6)
Tomorrow will be the seventh (lesson 7)

What we did today:
– binomials (pairs) eg: in and outs, ups and downs, pro and cons
– vocabulary: food, ordering food and drink

Vocabulary Binomials ( pairs)

1. We need to weigh up the pros and cons before making a decision.
2. I like to keep my room clean and tidy and organised.
3. You’ll learn this skill through trial and error. (= try and make mistakes, then try again)
4. I’ve got a few bits and pieces to finish before leaving.

You should sauté the onions and garlic before adding them to the sauce. “sor-tay”
Vegetables are often sautéed to keep them slightly crisp. “sor-tayd”
I usually make stock/broth from beef bones. I leave them in the slow-cook overnight.

Instructions:
• The guest arrives at a restaurant.
• The waiter greets them, asks about seating preferences, and gives a menu.
• The customer orders food and asks for recommendations.

Waiter: Good evening. Do you have a reservation?
Customer: No, but I’d like a table for two, please.
Waiter: Of course. Would you like to sit inside or outside?
Customer: Inside, please.
Waiter: Please follow me….. Is here ok? Here is the menu. Can I get you something to drink?
Customer: Yes, two glasses of the house red, please.
Waiter: Good choice! Would you like to hear today’s specials?

Waiter: Good evening! Welcome to The Most Incredible Hotel. Here’s the menu. Would you like something to drink while you decide?
Guest: Yes, mineral water, please.
Waiter: Would you like still or sparkling water?
Guest: Still water please
Waiter: Sure! I’ll bring that right away. Are you ready to order, or do you need more time?
Guest: I think I’m ready. I’ll have the ____ please.
Waiter: Great choice! Would you like any sauce with that? We have barbecue, garlic, and spicy chili sauce.
Guest: _______, please.
Waiter: How would you like your ribeye cooked?
Guest: Medium rare
Waiter: Ok. Would you like to add a side, like rice, potatoes or French fries?
Guest: No, just the ______________.

Asking for recommendations
(A guest is looking at the menu but seems unsure. The waiter approaches.)
Waiter: Hello! Can I help you decide?
Guest: Yes, I’m not sure what to order. What do you recommend?
Waiter: Well, our most popular dish is the seafood pasta. It has fresh shrimp, mussels, and a creamy garlic sauce.
Guest: That sounds delicious! Does it come with a side dish?
Waiter: No, but you can add a small side salad or garlic bread.
Guest: I’ll take the seafood pasta with a side salad.
Waiter: Excellent choice. Would you like a drink with that?
Guest: Yes, I’ll have ______________.
Waiter: Perfect. I’ll bring your drink first, and your meal will be ready soon.

(A guest is looking at the menu, and the waiter arrives to take the order.)
Waiter: Hi there! Are you ready to order?
Guest: Yes, I’d like to order a cheeseburger, but I don’t eat cheese. Can I have it without cheese?
Waiter: Of course! Would you like the burger with fries or a side salad?
Guest: Fries, please.
Waiter: No problem. Would you like any extra toppings—lettuce, tomato, onions? “lettuss”
