Phrasal verbs

At the weekend, I might meet up with some friends and go to a restaurant.

Eat up your breakfast! It’s time to go to school.

Drink up! Let’s go!  (= finish it)

I haven’t got any food at home, so I’ll probably eat out. (= at a restaurant/café).  Shall we eat out this evening?

I usually eat in to save money  (= eat at home).

It’s difficult not to put on weight over the Christmas period.  (opposite = lose)

I always try on clothes before I buy them.

When you look back on this year so far, what has been your happiest day?

Is there anything you’re looking forward to doing?   I’m looking forward to meeting up with my friend. I’m looking forward to seeing my parents again.  She’s looking forward to travelling to Brazil.  I’m not looking forward to anything particular. I’m looking forward to having a Christmas holiday.

Are there any kinds of shops you enjoy looking around?

Talk about some information you looked up online recently?  (=check information)

When you go away, who looks after your home?  (= take care of)

It absolutely poured down on Saturday afternoon.  (= rained very heavily)

Take an umbrella! It’s pouring down (with rain).

Can you pour the tea?

  • I have / I’ve got an older sister and a younger brother.
  • We’re having sausages for dinner tonight.  (= plans, food)
  • We’re having a party on Saturday.
  • I have a blue car  (= own)

 

Meet or meet up with?

  • I’m meeting up with my friends tomorrow.  (=informal)
  • I’m meeting my manager after lunch.
  • We’re meeting later for dinner.
  • We met up yesterday.

 

She’s at her sister’s.  (= sister’s home)
