CULTURE NOTES

The capital city of Japan, Tokyo is located in the centre of the country, around 100 kilometres from Japan’s highest mountain, Mount Fuji. Tokyo is considered to be the world’s largest city. Around 13 million people live in the city, but the number rises to around 37 million in the surrounding area. Many people commute to work from here to the centre of the city every day. Tokyo grew from a small village called Edo and in the 1720s it became the first city in Asia to have a population of more than one million. The city is still proud of its traditions despite being one of the world’s technology capitals and the richest city in the world.
