Vocabulary: What your body does

Which parts of the body are these?

You use these to kiss your loved ones     –   lips

You wear your watch (wristwatch) around this –  wrist

Your blood flows through these  – veins, arteries  (an artery)

These become decayed if you don’t brush them  teeth  Too many young children have tooth decay in the UK

These are at the end of your legs  feet

Where you process information and send signals to the rest of the body  brain

This pumps your blood around your body  – heart

When you are hungry, this rumbles – stomach    (I heard a rumble of thunder)

Bald men don’t have this! hair

These are on the back part of your feet   heels   High heels are terrible for your feet.

These are where your arms bend elbows

These join your feet to your legs  ankles

These join your arms to your hands   wrists

This moves in and out when you breathe   He’s breathing, I can see his chest moving.      lungs

This can get very sore if you have a cold   throat

These are where your legs bend   knees

This grows on men’s faces   a moustache/a mustache  a beard    a “goatie”  sideburns

Women often pluck these   “wimmin” eyebrows

People often bite these when they are nervous    nails

These are at the tops of your legs   thighs   (hips)

My cat often sleeps on this!  my lap

The mouth and breathing

How does your body let you know that you’re tired? When I can’t keep my eyes open

If you have a cold, or the flu, how does the body react?   You sneeze a lot, you can’t stop coughing  (sounds like “coffee” or “coffin”)

Why do people snore? Is there anything that can be done about it?

Why do people sigh?

Do you ever take any exercise that makes you out of breath? Is it good for you?  Climbing the steps up from Sveavägen always makes me out of breath.  I was out of breath running for the bus.  I gave up smoking because I was often out of breath doing simple activities.

How long can you hold your breath?
