After Lesson 6:
The notes from the lesson are here: Notes from Lesson 6 (17/12) | Sarah’s Blog
Tonight was our last lesson. Thank you all so much for joining, it was really nice to meet you all and I thought the group had a really nice atmosphere.
Keep up your English! You can come and look at this blog any time and I won’t remove the classnotes. Maybe in a couple of years when I really have to make some space, but then I will leave all the links I’ve ever given out to all of my classes. You can find the current list here: Useful websites and other resources to help you learn English | Sarah’s Blog
I also want to thank Marie for her suggestion of using ChatGPT to practise English for 10 minutes every day!
It is unlikely that the Wednesday continuation course will go ahead as we need a minimum of 6 (although please do contact me if you are interested and haven’t done so already). These would be the dates: Wednesdays: 14/1, 21/1, 4/2, 11/2, 25/2, 4/3, 18/3, 25/3 (No classes on 28/1, 18/2 or 11/3 as I cannot teach on those dates, so it’s all rather spread out)
In this case I will teach a Thursday evening class instead which starts on 29th January. There are already 4 students enrolled, so it should go ahead. Please register here if you would like to join us: English Conversation B2/C1 – Folkuniversitetet
Thanks again for these past 6 weeks! Happy Christmas and I hope to meet you again in 2026.
Homework from Lesson 5:
The notes from Lesson 5 are here: Notes from Lesson 5 (10/12) | Sarah’s Blog
We talked about the Nobel Lights display that is on until 14th December. More information is here if you are interested: Nobel Week Lights – Nobel Prize Museum
Please read through the questions on health and lifestyle (handed out in the lesson, and emailed).
Choose an article on the theme of health from your favourite website to talk about in groups next week. Suggested websites:
- TED: Ideas change everything
- BBC Learning English six minute English podcast
- Health & wellbeing | The Guardian
- Health | CNN
Do something good for your health and that is fun this week and tell us about it next week!
Here is a research project from the University of Cambridge that you may be interested in trying: Speak & Improve There is also one to help you with your writing: Write & Improve with Cambridge If you decide to try one or both, please let us know what you think.
Lesson 4:
The notes from Lesson 4 are here: Notes from Lesson 4 (3/12) | Sarah’s Blog
This is the online dictionary I recommended in class. Please do use it to explore new items of vocabulary: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/
Visit https://englishnewsinlevels.com/and choose an item of news that interests you. Why did you choose that particular piece of news, what was interesting and informative about it, and what new vocabulary did you learn? What is your opinion of this website?
I handed out some discussion questions on the topic of “Money” if you would like to prepare this for next week’s lesson and see how much vocabulary you can come up with. If you have the book you can work through Unit 40 which is on the same topic. I will email the questions.
I mentioned a very old programme from the 70s, early 80s called “Tomorrow’s World” where they talk about inventions of the future. If you are interested you could watch Tomorrow’s World: Mobile Phone 13 September 1979 but this is nothing we particularly need to discuss in class, it’s only for your own interest.
Please read through the notes from yesterday’s lesson with Mark: Notes from Lesson 3 (26/11)
Take a photo of a special moment in the coming week that you can show to a partner next lesson and describe what is happening in the photo.
Next week’s topic is communication and the internet and I will email you the questions.
- What TED talk did you choose and why did you choose it?
- What was it about?
- What was the most interesting fact that you picked up?
- Was there anything that surprised you?
- Was there anything you disagreed with?
- Will you do anything differently in the future based on what you learned?
- What new vocabulary did you learn that you think you might use in the future?
- Do you have any questions for each other?
I handed out some discussion questions at the end of the lesson yesterday (and will also email these to you). You can go through some of these topics in class next week with Mark, and the rest in the fourth lesson when I am back. It is up to you if you would like to read through the questions prior to the lesson.
Book: If you have purchased the book, these are the units you can study that will support what we are currently doing in the lessons: Unit 6 Weather and Units 19, 20 and 21 for vocabulary relating to Art, Literature, Theatre, Cinema and Music. You can check your answers with the key, and make a note of any questions you might have.
