The Meaning of Life and Reasons for Living

What’s IT all about?  Last lesson we spoke about communication. This lesson we shall try the small topic of ‘The Meaning of Life’ 😉

Below you can view the speech by Chaplin giving his view on how we might live.

Please consider the following questions, some of which we shall discuss in class.

  • What do you think is life all about?
  • What do you feel most people’s lives are driven by?
  • What image or metaphor best describes your life? A race, a circus or something else?
  • What if life on earth is really preparation for eternity, how would people act differently?
  • What is your opinion on why a lot of people have trouble believing in God?
  • Have you ever prayed to God?
  • What do you think about religious people worshipping God in churches or in temples?
  • Which is easier for people, public or private worship?
  • What do you think people usually fear when thinking of joining a new religion?

Advice to my Younger Self

Please read the letter below.  It was contributed to a book that asked 75 celebrities, writers, musicians, athletes, and actors this question: “If as an adult, you could send a letter to your younger self, what words of guidance, comfort, advice or other message would you put in it?” .

What would you say? Make some notes or even try writing a letter.

Communication or the lack of it…

How do you communicate with friends, family and colleagues? Is it different? Email, text, speech or by letter…

What about social media? Watch the video below and see what you think.  Does it change your opinion? How about when you were younger, did you have social media? Are your children constantly online? What do you actually use social media for? Do you miss letters, if so why?

The speech in this video is slow, clear and easy to follow.

Here’s a copy with subtitles 😉

and how about a letter…

Home

This week we will talk about what ‘Home’ means to us.

How we feel when we leave, what we need to feel ‘at home’ and where we like to go if we leave…

The Bucket List+

This week we will talk a little about our ‘Bucket List’, the experiences we would like to have before we die. We will also talk about the things that we hope to achieve; our ambitions and goals.

Please try to provide at least 5 items on your list for discussion.

Here’s the film trailer I showed you, it might be fun to see and will certainly help your English.

Also a little something else I spotted that might be inspiring https://www.bucketlist.org/activity/.

Welcome to ‘Dare to Speak English’ B2!

Welcome to this small group focusing on English conversation skills and building vocabulary. A key feature of these classes will be to increase our confidence when it comes to using English.

Please bring a notebook with you for this class, although the focus will be on conversation you may need to take notes at times.

Please explore the blog a little if you have time.

I look forward to meeting you all on Tuesday at 17.55 in the reception at Folkuniversitetet.
