English in the Evening B1

Welcome to English in the Evening B1! Here I will post notes from each class plus any homework, notes or interesting material such as resources or extra study exercises.

Hi all,

I’ll upload some useful links on this page and leave any tips I think will help you to improve your English outside of class.

Listening:

I recommend podcasts for this, as it’s easy for search and find ones in fields you’re interested in. I personally recommend anything on BBC Sounds as the quality is excellent. Try this one on English learning from the BBC.

Reading:

There are more words online than there are stars in the sky. Which, ironically, makes it difficult to know where to start. That all depends on your level. A good way to find your level is to test yourself with various ‘easy read’ books. All the publishers have their own series of books that are graded according to the European standard from Beginners up to Advanced.

You can find a great selection of Easy Read’s of all levels at Stockholm libraries, though obviously the bigger libraries (Odenplan, Medis) have the largest to choose from.

If you would like to read novels straight away then I usually suggest the ‘No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency’ series of books by Alexander McCall Smith. They’re fun and quite easy to read, and the quality of English is of the highest standard.

Talking:

This is one that is mostly up to you. A conversation class at Folkuniversitetet is always a good option, but they cost money. And you already have a class of students that you can talk with, so long as you’re all willing to get involved and someone is comfortable taking over organisational duties.

You can use the comment section on this blog to investigate if anyone else is interested in starting your own conversation group. Maybe you can form your own ‘Spräkcafe’ that others could join also, since it’s now possible to meet out in the world once more.

Helpful Websites and other Media:

This is where I will ask you to share anything you’ve found that has been interesting or useful. Do you know of any apps that have helped you to maintain interest in studying, or any other tools which you find interesting and would like to explore more.

Please, share with everyone and post in the comment section below.

Hope you all have a great winter, and keep improving your English levels. Maybe I’ll see you all again soon.
