Welcome to the final blog entry for this course.

Lesson 5

In our fifth lesson we looked at ’10A It might not have ben his real name’. For grammar we looked at Past modals of deduction. For vocabulary we spoke about adjectives with prefixes.

Lesson 4

Welcome back.

In our fourth lesson we did some speaking and reading exercises focusing on alternative medicine. We also looked at various ways to present a series of arguments when writing.

Lesson 3

Hello again.

In our third lesson we spoke about surprises. We also looked at some useful language for expressing uncertainty.

We also spoke about linking sounds when we speak, as well as intrusion.

Lesson 2

Welcome back to the blog.

In our second lesson we did a listening and speaking exercise about a dangerous banana hoax.

We also looked at vocabulary used for describing thoughts and knowledge.

For homework I asked you to complete the photocopy of the exercises for Unit 9B (page 53 from theback of the book).

If you would like to do some extra homework, you can write a few paragraphs about a hoax, scam or case of fraud that you know about. You can explain who was responsible for it, what they did, who were the victims of it, and what was the final result of the incident. Lesson 1

Hello everyone, and welcome to the course blog!

This blog is intended to help you get the most out of this course. After each lesson I will update it with a brief outline of what we cover in each lesson, as well as inform you of the homework that has been set. In future blogs I may also include links to videos or other web-pages to read to help your learning.

For any new students, I recommend that you read the blog entries from the previous course (just scroll down to the bottom of the page).

We began our first lesson by introducing ourselves to each other. It was very nice to meet you all. We have students from a variety of different countries and cultures.

The textbook we will be using is Cambridge English EMPOWER Second Edition Advanced B2  Combo B with Digital Pack. FOR THIS COURSE ONLY, you so not need to buy the book if you don’t want to. I can make photocopies for you (but you won’t be able to do some of the homework activitives).

However, if you wish to buy the book, the easiest and quickest place to buy the book is from Ferdosi Bookshop, Odengatan 21, Stockholm. Alternatively, you can buy and download a digital version of the book (with access to the website).

These books have a code that will let you use the supporting website for the textbook. You will regularly be given homework from the Digital Workbook which is accessed on this website. The code is on the inside cover of your textbook (You need to carefully scratch the grey material to see the code underneath). You will need then need to scan the QR code OR go to http://www.cambridgeone.org to register your textbook. Before you can register your textbook you will need to create an account. CLICK HERE to see instructions for how to create an account.

*PLEASE NOTE:  You do NOT need to Join a Class, that is only for online courses. However, I recommend you use the ‘Self Study’ section. Please have a look at all of this website, it is very helpful. The ‘Getting Help’ section might be useful if you have any problems.

We began our first lesson by introducing ourselves to each other. It was very nice to meet you all.

We then began to look at ‘9B They had no idea it was fraud’.

We spoke about different terms used to describe specific types of deception. We then read an article about the rise and fall of a man who committed major fraud.

For grammar we looked at reported speech and reporting verbs.

Welcome back to the blog.

In our sixth lesson we looked at ‘8B I would have opened it’.

For grammar we looked at the Third Conditional. We also looked at how we can use ‘should have + past participle’.

Lesson 4

Hello again.

In our fourth lesson we looked at ‘7B I could have it done by a professional’.

For vocbulary we spoke about film and TV, and for homework you were asked to look at houses.

For grammar homework you were sked to read about cusative ‘have’ and ‘get’.

For homework you need to complete the exercises for ‘3 GRAMMAR’ on page 84 (this includes the reading and exercises for 7B on pages 146 and 147). You should then complete the exercises for ‘4 VOCABULARY’ and ‘5 LISTENING’ on page 85. After that, you should do the PRONUNCIATION exercises on page 160. Finally, you need to complete the exercises for Unit 7B in the Online Workbook (or on page 41 in the black and white section at the back of the book).

OPTIONAL EXTRA HOMEWORK: If you feel like doing some extra study, I recommend that you complete all of Unit 7C and 7D on pages 86-89 (but you will need to register your book with the website to complete the listening exercises). For exercise 4d on page 89, please send me your answer directly in a NEW email if you would like me to check your writing.

Welcome back.

In our third lesson we looked at ‘7A There’s very little traffic’.

For vocabulary we looked at life in cities.

For grammar homework I asked you to read about the use of ‘too’, ‘enough’, ‘so’ and ‘such’.

For homework you need to complete all of the exercises for ‘3 GRAMMAR’ on page 81 (This includes reading the information and doing the exercises for 7A on pages 146 and 147). You should then complete all of the exercises for ‘4READING and LISTENING’, ‘5 VOCABULARY’, and ‘6 LISTENING’ on page 82. Finally, you need to complete the exercises for Unit 7B in the Online Workbook (or on page 40 in the black and white section at the back of the book).

Lesson 7

Welcome back to the final blog entry for this course.

Our current course finishes on Wednesday. Please click here if you would like to register to continue in the next course. This should be done as soon as possiblet o ensure the course starts.

In our seventh lesson we spoke some more about travel and tourism. For vocabulary we focused on adjectives that are used to express extreme positivity in very specific contexts. For pronunciation we also worked on placing stress on the correct syllables in these words.

For homework I asked you to complete the exercises for 6A on page 159. I aslo asked you to complete the ‘Unit 5 Revision and extension’ on page 66. (The blog videos from lessons 3 & 5 should help you with the grammar section of these exercises.)

In our sixth lesson we began by doing some exercises on phrasal verbs using ‘up’ (page 42). We also did some exercises that looked at different ways the word ‘as’ is used (page 54).

After that, we looked at ‘6A I’m not going to try to see everything’ from the textbook.

For grammar, we spoke about infinitives and -ing forms.

For vocbulary, we spoke a bit about travel and tourism.

Lesson 4

Welcome back to the blog.

We began by looking at some different expressions that use the word ‘face’ as either a noun or a verb (page 30).

We also completed some Unit 3 review exercises on page 42. The grammar exercises looked at  multi-word verbs, and the Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous tenses. The vocabulary exercises related to ability and achievement, and sport. Please review the blog entries for the fifth and sixth lessons of the previous course if you had difficulties with these exercises.

For homework, I asked you to complete the Grammar and Vocabulary exercises on page 54. The blogs for lesson 7 of the previous course and for lesson 2 of this course should assist you if you have any difficulty with the grammar.

If you would like to do any extra writing homework, you can send me an email with some detailed response to 1 or 2 of the questions from exercise 3d on page 30.

We began our first lesson by introducing ourselves to each other. I then gave you an outline of what to expect in this course.

Usually you are expected to buy a textbook, but as this is a continuation course we will be finishing one textbook and beginning a new textbook. Hello again!

In our sixth lesson we looked at ‘3B – There are a lot of good runners in Kenya’.

For Vocabulary, our topic was Sports. Click here for a link to an excellent Sports Definitions website that should help you with almost any specific competitive sports terminology that you might hear or read about. For general sports related terms, a normal dictionary will be sufficient.

For grammar we looked at Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous.

Lesson 5

In our fifth lesson we looked at ‘3A – I’m not very good in the morning’ from the textbook. We did some reading exercises which focused on the Vocabulary topics of Ability and Achievement. For homework you will look at some Multi-word Verbs (often called Phrasal Verbs).

Here are two videos that explain Multi-word Verbs. The first is a short video that explains how Multi-word Verbs can be used. The second video is a bit longer and focuses on the difference between Transitive and Intransitive Multi-word Verbs.

For homework you need to do the listening exercises on page 34. You also need to read the information for 3A on page 138, and then do the exercises for 3A on page 139. As usual, you should also do the exercises for Unit 3A in the Digital Workbook.

Next, we then started to look at the first chapter of the textbook: ‘1A – She is an inspiring woman’. We spoke about people we admire, and read some related articles. For vocabulary, we looked at some character adjectives. For grammar, we reviewed several different verb tenses: Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, Present Simple, Present Continuous, and Present Perfect.

For homework, you were asked read the information for ‘1A Review of tenses’ on page 134 and then do the Grammar exercises for ‘1A Review of tenses’ on page 135. After that, you should do exercise 3e on page 9.

If you have the textbook and can play the audio files, you should do all of the exercises for ‘3 LISTENING’ on page 10.
