Week 5’s lesson, 29th May

What we did in class

Discussion about the festivals Midsommar, Naadam/The Three Games of Men and the Dragon Boat Festival/Double Fifths.

A quiz on international holidays and festivals adapted from the National Geographic website.

Note on Guy Fawkes whose failed attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament is commemorated on 5th November (Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night) in the UK by fireworks and the burning of his effigy on bonfires. It is true that depending on where you are in the UK or whom you ask, he is celebrated as either a villain or a folk hero. One source says:

‘Some of the English have been known to wonder, in a tongue in cheek kind of way, whether they are celebrating Fawkes’ execution or honoring his attempt to do away with the government.’

Group task to invent a festival. You decided on the English-Speaking Festival of Gothenburg, which will be celebrated by compulsory English speaking and red double decker buses in the city. 🙂

Homework for Monday 6th
  • Prepare to talk about your current job or a previous job – where, when, for whom, with whom, your duties, a typical day?
  • Vocabulary exercises ‘Talking about your work’ and ‘Making a career’. Complete and correct by yourselves.
  • Prepare an elevator pitch. This is a short summary used to quickly and simply define a person, profession, product, service, organization or event and its value. Choose something you are interested in and prepare to talk for 1-2 minutes on it, e.g. the length of an elevator ride.
